ABBYY FormReader Enterprise Edition has a client-server architecture, consisting of 6 specialised Stations and an SQL-based Server which distributes tasks between the Stations.

Stations Features
Administration Station
The Administration Station is the workplace of administrator who prepares the system for performing forms processing. Administrator designs forms and templates, applies documents settings and batches options, operators' rights and passwords. The following design tools are accessible to the Station:
- FormDesigner module for creation blanks of structured forms:
- form types: grey drop-out forms and black-white linear or raster forms
- predefined elements: text, numeric, data, checkbox, picture
- automated template generation
- automated machine-readability checking
- export formats for printing: PDF, TIFF, JPG, PCX, PNG, and BMP
- Template Editor for creation templates:
- manual and automatic blocks detection
- powerful block settings
- various reference elements (black squares, corners, text, lines)
- FlexiCapture Studio tool for creation FlexiLayouts for semi-structured forms and documents (optional)
- eFormDesigner module for creation electronic forms (optional):
- automatic generation of electronic forms on the base of forms created by FormDesigner
- creating electronic forms from the scratch on the base of scanned images or images in PDF, TIFF, JPG, PCX, PNG, and BMP formats
- Visual Basic validation rules
- possibility to submit data from the completed form and send them to an URL address
- eFormFiller application for completing forms
Scanning Station
The Scanning Station is the workplace of an operator who scans paper documents or opens document images, groups them into batches and registers the batches in the system for further processing. The following functionality is available:
- TWAIN scanning interface
- ISIS scanning interface
- opening images in PDF, TIFF, JPG, PCX, PNG, BMP formats
- Kofax VRS drivers support
Registration Station
The Registration Station is a fully automated station that is used either instead of or simultaneously with the Scanning Station. The Registration Station automatically adds images appeared in a "hot folder" to a batch, registers the batch, and sends it to the Recognition Station. The Registration Station has API methods that allow customisation of input operations and creation of custom input modules.
Recognition Station
The Recognition Station requires minimum human involvement. Once the station is run it works in automated mode performing template matching and recognition of the batches from the queue. The following features are supported:
- Multi-page documents processing
- Template auto-identification for structured forms, semi-structured documents and their mix in one batch
- Compensation of linear and non-linear distortions (for faxed forms, etc.)
- Advanced ABBYY recognition and document analysis technologies based on IPA principles
- ICR (recognition of hand-printed characters) in 91 natural languages:
- 22 languages with morphology/dictionary support including: English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Czech, Slovak, Lithuanian, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, Romanian, Turkish, Croatian, Greek and more
- 69 languages with Latin, Cyrillic or Greek alphabets
- regional styles of hand-writing: European, American, Russian, Japanese, Thai and more
- marking types: framed, text over comb, underlined
- OCR (recognition of machine-printed characters) in 172 natural languages:
- 34 languages with morphology/dictionary support
- 138 languages with Latin, Cyrillic or Greek alphabets
- various text types: matrix printer, typewriter, typographic, OCR-A, OCR-B, MICR (E13B)
- OMR (recognition of checkmarks)
- check boxes of various shapes
- groups of check boxes
- any type of marks
- detection of checkboxes marked by mistake
- Optical Barcode Recognition
- 1D (Code 39, Check Code 39, Interleaved 25, Check Interleaved 25, EAN 8, EAN 13, Code 128, IATA 25, Codabar, UPCA, UPCE, Code93, UCC-128);
- 2D (PDF 417)
- 34 dictionaries for natural languages and regional dictionaries of names, surnames, towns, streets, etc.
- Multi-line text recognition
Verification Station
The Verification Station is the workplace of an operator who checks the recognition results. This station is most multiplied one for increasing productivity of the whole system. The main features of the Verification Station are:
- Three verification modes:
- context verification for verifying text field contents;
- group verification (up to 300 characters per second);
- verification in form.
- Several levels of verification depth, i.e. highlighting of uncertainly recognised characters
- Comfortable verification interface
- Validation by using one-page rules
Correction Station
The Correction Station performs automated applying validation rules and assembling pages into multi-paged documents. The station is the workplace of an operator who corrects the assembling and validation rules errors. The following features are supported:
- Built-in automatic validation rules:
- checking against a database;
- checking sums;
- replacing values from the list;
- normalising dates and prices.
- Custom automatic validation rules:
- by using Visual Basic language;
- by using Automation API.
- Multi-page validation rules
- Assembly checking
- Verification, scanning and recognition (optional)
Export and Monitoring Station
The Export and Monitoring Station provides automated or manual export to:
- Files in XML, CSV formats;
- Content management systems (Documentum 5.2);
- Databases via OLE DB;
- Any repositories by using custom export modules via API.
The following export formats are supported:
- For data: XML, CSV;
- For images: PDF, TIFF, JPG, PCX, PNG, BMP;
- For documents: PDF, DOC, HTML, TXT.
The following monitoring tools are available on the station:
